Ten years after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. Delon Hampton, Ph.D., founded Delon Hampton & Associates Chartered (DHA), an award-winning civil and structural engineering firm based in Washington, D.C.. Today, we proudly celebrate over 50 years of engineering excellence.
Since our founding, DHA’s culture has been defined by a well-informed, can-do attitude and an unwavering commitment to hard work and perseverance. Dr. Hampton instilled in us the importance of pushing beyond our comfort zones, and that legacy continues to guide us. The many award-winning projects we’ve delivered over the decades area testament to those core values.
I am both humbled and honored to lead DHA as we embark on the journey into our next 50 years. I remain fully committed to the values that brought us here and am equally dedicated to addressing the unique challenges ahead. These include modernizing aging infrastructure, advancing resilient design to mitigate climate change, integrating cutting-edge technologies, and mentoring the next generation of engineers and technicians.
Our profession faces a critical challenge: the pipeline of civil engineering graduates is not keeping pace with growing demand. As one of the nation’s long-standing African American-owned engineering firms—and with African Americans representing less than 6% of civil engineers—we believe we have a responsibility to help grow that number. That’s why, on this first day of Black History Month, February 1, 2024, I am proud to announce the launch of the DHA Scholarship Trust. Beginning in Spring 2024, the trust will award four-year scholarships to qualified African American students pursuing civil engineering degrees.
